(1 Jul 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): OLD SETTLER DIES John W. Lucas was born near Little Rock, Arkansas, July 29, 1866. Moved with his parents to Dallas, Tex., when about five years old, his father homesteaded near Dallas, which was only a store, post office and saloon at that time. He was married to Miss Mary Allee, April 14, 1886, to this union was born ten children, all of whom are still living, except his eldest daughter, Jennie, who preceded him in death. Mr. Lucas moved to Oklahoma in an early day, homesteading what is now a part of the town site of Elk City. He then moved with his family to Hammon in 1911, moving back to Dallas in 1924, to the old home place. He taken suddenly ill about three weeks ago, his daughters Mmes. A. L. Stinson, Wiley Harris, Ed Shelby, and his sister, Mrs. Frank Allee, all of Hammon, were summoned, and left immediately to be at his bedside. They stayed three weeks and thinking he was improving, returned home on Sunday; they received a message on Sunday night that he was stricken with paralysis, and could not possibly live. Mmes. Frank Allee, and Wiley Harris left Monday, to be with him in the last hour, but word was received before they reached Dallas that he had passed away. The doctors decided his death was due to a strain received while unloading some gravel, which afterwards resulted in paralysis. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Will and Hudson of Dallas, seven daughters, Mmes. Stella Petty, Edna Page, Miss Marie and Lola, all of Dallas, and Mmes. Bertha Shelby, Clara Harris, Zetta Stinson and a sister Mrs. Frank Allee, of Hammon, Okla., also one brother, Bliss Lucas of Dallas. Mr. Lucas departed this life Monday, June 21. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Irving, (near Dallas), of which church he has been a member since a young man.
