(15 Sep 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Mary F. McAlpin Maguire passed away September 2 at 2 o'clock a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Knowles, 2607 Case street, Omaha, Nebraska. During her last illness, which lasted about six weeks, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Knowles, who did all in her power to stay the hand of death. She did not for a moment conceive the idea of giving up her mother, even at the age of 80 years, which her mother had attained. But alas! While man proposes, God disposes, and the final summons came to join that innumerable caravan that moves to the mysterious realms, where each shall take up their abode in that everlasting home of happiness allotted to them by their Beneficent Creator. The deceased was born in North Vernon, Indiana, in 1847; in 1850 her parents came west to Davenport, Iowa. Here she resided with her parents until her marriage to Mr. Peter Maguire in 1868. To this union was born three children, William, Frank and Lulu, all of whom survive her. Her husband preceded her in death several years ago. At the time of his demise they resided in Vail, Iowa, where she still made her home until two years ago, when she made her home with her daughter whom she loved. The surviving relatives left to mourn are two sons, Frank of Vail, Iowa, William of Omaha, Nebraska and Mrs. William Knowles, also of Omaha; two brothers and one sister, William of Elk City, Mrs. Edward Quigley of Elk City, and Charles E. of Omaha; a number of grandchildren and a host of admiring friends. The remains were shipped to Vail, Iowa for burial. Funeral services were held Monday, September 5, from St. Anne's Church, Rev. Fr. Sullivan officiating. After requiem Mass the funeral train moved mournfully on to the silent city of the dead, followed by a large concourse of mourning friends who had assembled in vast numbers to pay their last tribute of respect to their esteemed friend. In the family lot in the beautiful cemetery at Vail she was laid to rest with ceremonies. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
