(27 Jan 1924, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MRS. MARTHA MANNIN DIED. The death of Mrs. Martha Mannin occurred at her home in Hefner neighborhood Sunday, January 13, 1924, at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 1 day. For over a week she had suffered from a stroke of paralysis which involved excruiating physical pain. She closed her eyes in the quiet seclusion of her own home, her last hours being passed in peaceful slumber which changed almost imperceptibly into the deepest repose of death. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home and her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Fairlawn cemetery in Elk City. I have never known a woman who possessed a more passionate loyalty to deep and unalterable conviction, who manifested a deeper interest in her family home, or who revealed a more positive christian character. In her passing from the sphere of earthly life the circle of a christian fellowship in the Hefner community sustains the loss of one of its noblest and most gracious personalities. Sister Mannin was married to S. T. Mannin in 1887. To this happy union was born 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. Two girls have passed to their reward, and her loving husband preceeded her about 4 years. All the children were present except the dear boy who had recently moved and could not be located. Sister Mannin confessed faith in Christ at the age of sixteen and united with the M. E. Church South, of which she was a faithful member. She was a good mother, taking her children into her arms as a heritage from God, and ever striving to bring them to manhood and womanhood in full development of body, mind and spirit. Their devotion to her all their lives is the answer for all the love she lavished upon them. She was the kind of mother that read God's Holy Word and prayed with her children in the dear old home, and untiringly told them of Jesus and his love. The writer saw her dear boy Jim as he returned home, kiss his dear old mother's lips, the last words to him, "Jim be a good boy," and the sweet reply came back, "I will, mother." And the same with all her dear children. She was so good. J. W. Newman, P.
