(10 Jan 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Rev. J. W. Martin Rev. James W. Martin was born Nov. 26, 1844, in Logan County, Ky., passed away January 1st, 1924, age 79 years, 1 month and 5 days. He moved to Boone County, Mo. when about 10 years old with his widowed mother. He and his brother Robert helped her rear and support the younger children. The deceased was married about the year of 1865 to Miss Laura Ament; to this union 2 children were born, a son and a daughter, the daughter passed away in childhood. He was ordained in the Salem Baptist Church, Boone County, Mo. in 1888 by Dr. Isabel and others, attended the Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., graduating from same in 1891, pastored various churches in Boone and Fulton Counties, Mo. Being left a widower he came to Oklahoma in 1900 where he found a country ripe for the Master's workers, Brother Martin pastored a number of churches in western Oklahoma and labored hard for the cause of Christ. He assisted in organizing Hebron Church near Elk City, which started with a membership of 11 growing to 50 members during his pastorate there of three years. He was an intimate friend of Dr. D. B. Ray, Author of Baptist succession, and had been instructed by Dr. John A. Broadus. He was married, Aug. 4, 1921, to Miss Maggie McGregor and at the time of his death they were living on their farm northwest of Hammon. The deceased was a good farmer as well as an able minister. Brother Martin has had a remarkable career, was a man of strong character and a kind and loving disposition being cheerful even when reverses and afflictions came upon him, his life was so lived that is a guiding star to those who knew him. Besides his widow he leaves a son, W. P. of Columbia, Mo., a beloved brother, J. R., better known as uncle Bob Martin, of Elk City, several grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom loved the deceased very dearly. The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Elk City. A large crowd was present to show their last respect for the deceased brother.
