(26 Dec 1929, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK) Robert Donnell Martin was born at Alvarado, Texas, July 24, 1884, where he spent the greater part of his boyhood days. In 1901 he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Martin, to Beckham County, Oklahoma, where they homesteaded about five miles north of Sayre. Here he experienced the joys and hard ships incident to pioneer life. Don's forefathers came of Eminent Tennessee and Georgia families. The Ewings on his grandmother's side helped to organize the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and Rev. Finis Ewing was one of the drafters of the confession of faith of that church. He was named for Rev. Robert Donnell, who was one of the most active ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian church in its early history. He was the eldest son of a family of eleven children, who have all lived to be grown. There were eight girls and three boys of this family: Robert Donnell Martin, Sayre; Mrs. L. I. Bennett, Hobart; Mrs. J. C. Mackenzie, Carter; Mrs. G. W. Sewell, Erick; Mrs. Sam Gossett, Sayre; Ben E. Martin, Elk City; Sam Martin, Pampa, Texas; Mrs. Roy Dunlop, deceased; Mrs. Janie Colpe, Elk City; Mrs. George Vernon, Blair; and Miss Margaret Martin of Elk City. He was married to Hazel Hodgson May 29, 1910. To this union was born one child, Donnell Dillon Martin, who lives with his mother in Sayre. Don helped to build the Rock Island Railway through Beckham county and worked for two years at the round house in Sayre, where he made many friends among railroad men. For the last three and a half years he was engaged on the state and county highways. He was an active member of the Masonic orders of Sayre, the Masters Lodge, The Chapter and the commandery. He was of cheerful disposition and readily made friends wherever he went. His many friends will sorely miss him and greatly sympathize with the bereaved family. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
