When five years old she went to Iowa with her parents and lived in that state until after her marriage to John Martin, which occurred on September 30th, 1867. To this union five children were born, three boys and two girls all of whom, with her husband, survive her. The children are: Mrs. Nellie Lusk, Beaver, Okla.; J. W. Martin, C. A. Martin, Henry G. Martin and Mrs. Belle Guest of Elk City. There are twenty-three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, also two half brothers. Two grand-children preceeded her in death. She was converted at the age of sixteen and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her life was beautiful to all who knew her because of her excellent christian character. Her modesty and humility were qualities in her christian life that caused all who knew her to think highly of her and who now miss her since she has gone to her heavenly home. Mrs. Martin had been sick for the past year, a sufferer from dropsy. But she was very patient in her suffering and it was borne with christian fortitude. She was very much devoted to her family and enjoyed being in the home with the husband and children more than anything else. She was always considerate of the welfare of others, devoted to truth, cheerful and pleasant on social occasions, kind and loving in the home. Her friends and loved ones will cherish her memory and profit by her example. One of the beautiful things that comes to our minds is the long journey together of the husband and wife. Many of our people recall helping them to celebrate their golden wedding nearly six years ago when living on their farm northwest of Elk City. For nearly 56 years they have journeyed hand in hand. Changes have been many. Expectations they had with many of them realized, some disappointments, some hopes blighted, but another home is founded where the treasure is taken from the earthly house and transferred to the heavenly house. Funeral services conducted by Rev. R. B. Gettys were held at the First M. E. Church, on Friday afternoon, which was attended by a very large crowd. Mrs. Martin had lived in and around Elk City for over a quarter of a century and had made a large acquaintance, and they not only enjoyed her friendship in life, helping her in her days of illness but attended the last sad rites to show the love and respect they had for her. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers - emblems of life not emblems of death. They were from the family, one floral offering from C. A. Martin's Sunday School class of the Baptist Church and some from friends. The ladies of the church placed several bouquets of flowers on piano and platform. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
