(4 Jul 1912, Thursday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): John Mathews died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Britian, six miles south of town, Friday night. The body was prepared for shipment, and taken to Enis (sic), Texas for burial, Saturday, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Dodson, of Amorilla, Texas. Mr. Mathews was 81 years old, and had made his home with Mrs. Britian for several years. (12 Jul 1912, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): DIED. - J. L. Matthews, age 81, father of Mrs. J. A. Britton, who resides over on Elk Creek at Taylor, died Friday and was brought to Carter Sunday and his remains shipped to Ennis, Texas, for interment. Mr. Matthews had been partially paralyzed and was bedfast for 18 or 20 months before his death. Mr. and Mrs. Britton and a host of sorrowing friends came over to Carter and were present when his remains were placed on the train for shipment. The sincere sympathies of that neighborhood go out to Mr. and Mrs. Britton and their relatives in the loss of Mrs. Britton's father, and they are pointed to Him who doeth "all things well."
