Dora Katherine Dinwiddie Mayer, wife of D. A. Mayer, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martha Helen Ellis, at Tekeman, Nebraska, Tuesday, October 4th, following an illness of several weeks. The body was brought to Sturgeon Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church, where she was an active member for so many years during her residence here. Rev. Sam Frank Taylor of Columbia, pastor of the church here when Mrs. Mayer was a member, officiated. After the services the body was interred at Mt. Pisgah. The remains of the deceased were accompanied here by her husband, D. A. Mayer, the four children who survive: Mrs. Martha Helen Ellis of Tekman, Nebraska; Walter Frank Mayer and Mrs. Anna Bess Wilson, of Chicago; and Miss Julia Mayer of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Charles H. Mayer, of St. Joseph, brother of D. A. Mayer. Others here to attend the funeral were: B. F. Mayer and wife of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. O. G. Bantley of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Dr. and Mrs. T. H. Dinwiddie, Ernest Dinwiddie and wife, Scott Welch, Miss Annie Welch, Mrs. W. H. Welch, Mrs. W. A. Seymour and W. F. Jones and wife, all of Higbee; Mrs. F. E. Carr, of Wichita, Kansas; Porter Gilvin and wife of Jefferson City; Mrs. Bettie Rogers, Joe Mullen, Miss Sadie Mullen of Moberly; Archie Dinwiddie, Morris Dinwiddie, Mrs. Laura Wright, Mrs. C. A. Raum, Geo. R. Summers and wife, Mrs. J. T. Davis, all of Columbia; John Sames and Charles Sames of Centralia; W. P. Maddox and wife, Bert Winn and wife and Miss Delia Winn, of Hallsville. The deceased was born in this county on a farm south of Harrisburg, on November 5th, 1859, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H. S. Dinwiddie. When she grew to young womanhood she became the wife of David A. Mayer on November 23, 1879. For a number of years she made her home in Sturgeon with her husband. It was here seven children were born to this union, most of whom grew to maturity before the parents moved to Oklahoma, and four of whom now survive. She united with the Sturgeon Baptist church during her early married life and through the years that followed was ever a true and loyal member. When a resident here she was active at all social gatherings so that when she moved to Oklahoma with her husband her loss, with that of her family, was a distinct one to our town, deepened now by the loss of the life we knew so well, which has stilled the hearty laugh we've heard so often. Besides the children and husband, the deceased leaves two brothers, Dr. T. H. Dinwiddie and Archie Dinwiddie both of Higbee. Three children preceded the mother to the grave. They are: Fannie Mayer who died in Sturgeon when a little girl; Willie Mayer, who died at Elk City, Okla., and Friedman Mayer, who died at Calexico, California. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
