Up till the last moment, the doctor had faith in his early recovery, and was always cheerful during his illness of three weeks. His son, Judge E. G. McComas of Sayre, was with him most of the time since his illness. Due to his advanced age, his constitution could not survive the rigors of his disease, uraemic poisoning. Dr. McComas was a Mason and his funeral was held, Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. at his residence on Broadway under the direction of A.F.&A.M., Rev. J. E. Tracy officiating. He was nearly seventy-seven years of age, being born at Denville, Ky., February 29, 1844. At the time of his death, his sons, Dr. Arthur McComas of Sturgeon, Mo., and E. G. McComas, with family from Sayre, were at his bed side. Others present were Mrs. Bantly of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Hedley of Norman and Mrs. Joe Hiner of Shawnee. Judge Minton and Judge Tracy of Sayre, and all Elk City doctors with a number of out of town friends were present at the funeral. The business of the city was suspended during the funeral hour. (10 Mar 1921, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): FROM MISSOURI PAPER. (Surgeon, Mo. Leader.) DR. J. M. McCOMAS DEAD Died at His Home in Elk City, Oklahoma, Tuesday Night. A telegram received here on Wednesday morning told of the death of Dr. J. M. McComas, formerly of this place and for many years a practicing physician here, at his home in Elk City, Okla., at 10 o'clock, Tuesday night. His son, Dr. A. R. McComas, went to his bedside last Thursday in response to a telegram he received announcing his father was very ill. Death resulted from poison, which went through his system after some of his teeth had been extracted. Dr. McComas was born at Newton, Kentucky, on February 29, 1844, making him at the time of his death but a few days under 77 years of age. The history of Boone county (Missouri) tells the deceased lost both of his parents at an early age, who were then living in Illinois. Upon their death he returned to his relatives in Kentucky. He went next to Philadelphia, and at the early age of eleven years embarked with his uncle on a voyage to South America, where he remained for a short time. Returning from the tropics he spent the remainder of his youth in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. While yet a mere youth, he attended a course of medicine at Missouri Medical College, St. Louis, in the class of 1860-61. He took one degree at the Pennsylvania Medical College, Philadelphia, and two at the medical department of Central University, Louisville, Ky., where he was graduated in 1875, with the degree of M.D. In 1880 he took the degree of M.D. at the Kentucky School of Medicine, Louisville. The deceased was for many years a practicing physician here, where he built up an extensive practice. He went to Oklahoma a number of years ago and located at Elk City. He enjoyed a large practice there, though of late years he confined his work to office practice and consultation with other physicians on cases. He was a man, who possessed many gentlemanly and kindly traits, neat in his dress and appearance, affable of manner and extremely courteous and considerate. He leaves a wife and two sons, Judge E. G. McComas and Dr. A. R. McComas. The deceased had many friends here who will learn with regret of his death. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
