JOHN McDONALD. Mary Emma Sousley was born Feb. 10, 1845, near Versailles, Morgan county, and passed away at the home of her son, James D. McDonald, at Elk City, Oklahoma, March 17, 1927, at the age of 84 years, 1 month, 7 days. She had been failing in health for the past three years but was confined to her bed for only a few weeks. The subject of our sketch lived to see the golden sunset of life and indeed was hers one of a rainbow hue, like the hidden pot of manna, giving it cheerfully and happily. She found service in the humble things of life at home and the duties of kindly service for those she loved dominated her life and actions. She was married to John McDonald February 16, 1868. To this union four children were born, three of whom preceded her to the Great Beyond: Johnnie, who died in 1869, Mattie, who died August 13, 1878; Helen (Mrs. L. W. Hicks) who died April 3, 1924; one son surviving, James D. McDonald of Elk City, Oklahoma. She also leaves one brother, John Sousley, in Montana, and one sister in Tipton, Mo., and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. McDonald moved to Oklahoma in the early days and settled at Pawnee, Oklahoma, in 1892, coming to Roger Mills county in 1900, and has made her home in Elk City and vicinity until the time of her death. Modesty, simplicity and kindness were evenly blended in this character and those who knew her best loved her most. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Tracy at the Presbyterian Church. He spoke many true and consoling words, as Mrs. McDonald had placed her faith in Christ at an early age and had lived a true Christian life that might well be an example to anyone. Sleep on, tired heart, you have earned your rest. She was laid to rest in Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City, Oklahoma, March 18, 1927. - A Friend. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
