(9 Aug 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Pioneer Cordell Resident Died on Vacation Trip. J. W. McNutt, pioneer of Washita County, died at Dalhart, Texas, Wednesday evening at 8:45 o'clock. Funeral services for Mr. McNutt will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Church of Christ and burial will be made in the West Boggy cemetery near Mr. McNutt's early home in Washita County. Mr. McNutt, who had been in ill health for several months following an attack of bronchial pneumonia early in the spring, had started Sunday evening for Colorado where he planned to spend his vacation. He became seriously ill at Dalhart and was not able to go any farther on his trip. He was unconscious from Monday morning until his death Wednesday evening which it is thought resulted from an attack of apoplexy. Homesteaded Claim. Mr. McNutt came to Washita county in 1892 and homesteaded a claim in the West Boggy community. He had lived in Cordell during the last nine years. He was born in 1868 and moved to Texas when he was a young boy. He was married to Miss Sally Norton in 1892. Mr. McNutt is survived by his wife, by three sons, Fred McNutt and J. O. McNutt of Elk City, and Billups McNutt of Oklahoma City; and by two daughters, Mrs. Charles Duncan of Dill and Mrs. Ernest DeWees of Sentinel. All of them were with him at Dalhart at the time of his death. - Cordell Beacon. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
