Although her death had been expected for several weeks, there were days when she would appear much better and her relatives would have hopes for her recovery, so her death was a shock to the many friends here. The body was brought to Elk City, Wednesday night, and funeral services conducted by Rev. Herenthal of Canute, were held at St. Josephs Church at 10 o'clock this morning, after which the body was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. The mother and two brothers, Ambrose and Raymond, and other relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. (18 Sep 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): BERNADINE McVEIGH Born October 2, 1906 Died September 9, 1924 Many people assembled at St. Joseph's church last Thursday morning to pay their last respects to one of Elk City's loved girls, Bernadine McVeigh who had passed away in Oklahoma City on Tuesday before, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Oklahoma City, after suffering a long time from the effects of an operation on May 5th for appendicitis, later having two local operations and finally a peritoneal operation. The pall bearers were Ed Story, Troy Sheets, Raymond Tesmar, Neal O'Brien, Ed Lanferman and Maurine Queenan. Rev. Herenthal of Canute, paid a beautiful tribute to the life of Bernadine, whose death had cast a gloom over her home, her friends and the town she loved so much. She had made such a wonderful fight to live, never seemingly to give up, always saying she was better and expected to soon be back in school. But she was prepared to go if it was God's will, and her beautiful christian character helped her very much in the long hours of suffering. She was a very pleasant girl always having a good word and a smile for everyone. She was loved by her associates in school church and social life, and will be sadly missed by them. She was so appreciative of the many kindnesses shown her during her illness and she received many beautiful flowers while on her sick bed, and when she was laid to rest, the grave was covered with many beautiful offerings. Bernadine was born in Vail, Iowa, October 2nd, 1906, and when nearly two years of age moved with her parents to Elk City. Her father passed away several years ago and her mother Mrs. Gertrude McVeigh and brothers Raymond and Ambrose are left to mourn with many relatives, among them Aunt Ella McAlpin, who loved her as her own and was ever ready to help her in every way. The News Democrat wishes to join with the many friends in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
