Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Brethren on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Pitzer, of Oklahoma City. Obituary will be printed next week. (20 Mar 1925, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): J. A. McVEY. James Absolom McVey was born August 16th, 1851, at Rosehill, Mo., and died March 12th, 1925, at Elk City, Oklahoma. He was united in marriage to Miss Anne Quick, August 8th, 1880. To this union were born six children, three of whom, with their mother, preceded him in death. On April 5th, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie E. Byerly, and to this union was born one son, who died in infancy. In early manhood Mr. McVey united with the Christian church, the church of his fathers. Later he chose to unite himself with the Church of the Brethren in which faith he labored to the end a devout christian, a devoted husband and a loving father. He went his simple ways of life, seeing the light, and desiring it for his fellowmen, fighting for the right it was given him to see, bearing the sorrows of his life with majesty. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and three children, Mrs. Ottoline Short of Okmulgee, Okla., Daniel B. McVey of Brawley, California, and Anne McVey of New York, also the members of his church and loved friends. The funeral services were held last Saturday morning at the Church of the Brethren, where the large crowd attending attested to the love and respect in which he was held by our people. The casket was covered with many beautiful floral offerings and many others were banked around the brier. Eld. Carman of the Church of Christ read the 23rd Psalm which he thought was very appropriate for Mr. McVey as the Lord was his Shepherd and in his closing days there was no fear. He was calm and peaceful for he had loved and served God many years and loving him devotedly, could say with David, "Though I walk through the valley and shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou art with me." He paid a tribute to the life of his friend. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
