(27 Jan 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MERRITT FATHER DIES, LEARN HERE J. H. Merritt, father of J. L. Merritt and Mrs. E. B. Smallwood, of this city, died at his home in Eagle City, Okla., early this morning. Mr. Merritt had visited here a number of times and had a number of friends here. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt, Mrs. Smallwood and M. L. Merritt of Mangum, left at noon today for Eagle City. Funeral arrangements had not be made, Mr. Merritt said. (29 Jan 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Aged Pioneer of This County Dies After Prolonged Illness Funeral services for James Merritt, 72, father of J. L. Merritt and Mrs. E. B. Smallwood, of this city, were held this morning at 11 o'clock in the First Baptist church with Rev. H. W. Shirley officiating. Mr. Merritt died at the home of his son, J. F. Merritt, in Eagle City, Monday morning after a prolonged illness. Mr. Merritt came with his family and settled near Doxey in 1903. He was a building contractor in Texas before coming to this state. Having reared his family in this locality and many of his children prominently known in the vicinity now. Mr. Merritt was widely known and was a historic figure in the country. Mr. Merritt was the father of eight children, four of whom live in or near Elk City at present. J. L. Merritt has lived in Elk City for the past nine years. Mrs. Smallwood has been in the city for a number of years. L. M. Merritt, a son who lives at Mangum, and Carl Merritt, a son who lives in Erick, are well known over this section. Another son, Lee Merritt lives in Santa Monica, California. Two daughters besides Mrs. Smallwood are living. They are: Mrs. C. H. Kimball of Dallas, Texas; and Mrs. J. W. Caster of Riverside, California. One daughter, Carrie Bell Watkins, is dead. Interment was made in the Fairlawn cemetery with Grubitz and Son, funeral directors, in charge. (30 Jan 1930, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): J. H. Merritt, father of Carl Merritt of this city, died at his home in Eagle City, Oklahoma, Monday according to reports reaching here Tuesday.
