(8 Jan 1903, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Passed Over the Divide We chronicle this week the death of one of the pioneers of Western Oklahoma. William J. Miller died at his home on the Sweetwater in Wheeler County, Texas, December 27th 1902, at 5 o'clock p.m. Deceased settled in McCullouch county, Texas, in 1861; was in the cattle business all his life. He was wounded by Indians January 17, --- (year incomplete), having received 27 wounds during the fight, from which he recovered after a long illness. He moved to Colorado in 1862. In 1874 he had the last Indian spike cut out of hip that had been in there about 7 years. He moved from Colorado to Dodge City, Kansas where he lived a number of years and moved from there to Sweetwater sometime in the 80's, where he resided at the time of his death. "Uncle Bill," as he was familiarly known was a big open-hearted man, and never turned a man from his door. Besides his wife and three children, he leaves five brothers - D. H., W. J., F. M., ? J., M. R. The three children are Zeth Miller, formerly Sheriff of this county, and two daughters to mourn his death. We will publish next week a history of his life and the story of his great Indian fight.
