Funeral services were held at the Christian Church. Again the death angel appears in our midst and calls from us one of Elk City's most popular and lovable women, Florence Cook Miller. Mrs. Miller suffered an attack of Flu, but thought she had recovered sufficiently to leave the hospital. Within a few days she suffered a relapse and although she made a gallant fight it was without avail and as relatives stood by her bedside she fell asleep, Tuesday, January 1, at about 4:00 p.m. For more than a week one of the questions most often heard on the streets and in the homes of Elk City people was, "how is Florence today?" Telephone calls constantly were being phoned to the hospital during her illness and expressions of sympathy and offers of help from the people of Elk City were eloquent testimonials of the affection of the townspeople for Florence. The sad news of her passing brought genuine sorrow to hundreds of homes in Elk City. Florence was modest and unassuming, but her pleasant sunshiny manner and her unselfish devotion to her friends, won her a warm place in hearts of those who enjoyed the privilege of her friendship. She came to Elk City as a small girl and made her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. Jim Cook, and Mrs. Woodard and her cousin, who is now Mrs. Vera Gibbs. She united with the Christian church when a small girl. Since her marriage in March 1921, to Levi Miller, she has lived for the larger part of the time in Arizona. For some time past Florence had been connected with the Farmers National Bank of this city and in this capacity she made many friends in the business world. She was a lover of the younger folk and most popular with them in a social way. Funeral services were held at the First Christian church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Rev. Carl V. Covey, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Mrs. Carl V. Covey sang "O Eyes That Are Weary" and "There Will Be No Tears in Paradise," accompanied by Mrs. Walter Blackburn at the piano. A large crowd of friends and acquaintances and the profuse floral offerings paid tribute at the last rites for the sweet girl whose smile brought sunshine into the hearts of those who knew her. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
