W. MILLER DIED LAST SUNDAY J. W. Miller was an old timer in these parts and leaves a loving wife and two sons and a daughter and several grandchildren. There are Joe and his wife of Clinton, Mrs. R. H. Callionette and husband of Elk City, and C. G. of Kingman, Kansas, who drove here with their two children last Sunday evening. Russell, another son, preceded his father to the grave about three years ago, having contracted tuberculosis while service his country in the World War. He left three children who now live with their mother at Nowata. C. G. Miller is a pioneer here and ten years ago was interested in the Elk City printing and newspaper business. He has been with one employer at Kingman, Kansas, the past nine years. Obituary. Joseph William Miller, oldest son of Jonas and Mary Ann (Howard) Miller, was born in Grayson county, Texas, on December 3, 1859, and passed away on Monday morning, December 7, 1925, aged 66 years and 4 days. At an early age he went with his parents to north-central Missouri, where they located in Carroll County, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. On September 16, 1883, he was married to Hattie E. Teter. To this union four children were born. In October 1906 the family moved to Western Oklahoma where they located in Elk City February 1906 (sic), where the deceased has since resided. For many years he followed agricultural pursuits, but in later years he engaged in railroad work which he followed until about eight years ago when he suffered several strokes of paralysis, followed by diabetes and dropsy, since which time he has been an invalid. All that medical skill and loving care could do was done, but could not stay the grim reaper. Mr. Miller was a quiet and peaceful citizen, preferring the more private walks of life to participation in public affairs. His friends were many and true and were a source of much pleasure in his life, and much comfort in later years. He is survived by his faithful companion, two sons, Clifford G. of Kingman, Kansas, and Joe W., of Elk City, and one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Caillonett, of Elk City, the second son, Russell having preceded him in death four years ago. The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon, December 8, 1925, at the Church of Christ, Elder J. C. Carman officiating and the body was laid to rest in Fairlawn cemetery, Grubitz & Son having charge of the arrangements. Mr. Miller was one of the oldest residents of Elk City, and while he did not seek the spotlight of public life, did much in his humble way to advance the town and community he loved. Honest, upright, a kind husband and father, he had the admiration to those with whom he came into contact. He lived quietly yet nobly and has gone to reap the reward of a life well lived. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
