(13 Dec 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): D. L. MILSTEAD DEAD D. L. Milstead, living near Canute who has been sick for many months died this morning. He would have been sixty-five years old on Saturday. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. T. Allen. A. S. and C. W. Mercer of Ray County, Mo., arrived here this morning to be present at the funeral. They are brothers of Mrs. Milstead. We extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones, and trust we will be furnished a suitable obituary for next week's issue. (20 Dec 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): On December 13th, 1917, the death angel entered the home of D. H. (sic) Milstead, and called the husband and father away. Brother Milstead had been in poor health for more than three years and was prepared for the final summons. He was born in the state of Missouri, where he grew to young manhood, and where he married Miss Mercer, to which union four children were born, three of whom are still living. The family came to Oklahoma several years ago and settled on a farm near Canute. In early life Brother Milstead professed religion and united with the M. E. Church South and remained a true and faithful member until death. He was also a true Odd Fellow. About three months ago I visited our brother, talked with him about his soul, and his going, and he talked calmly about it and said he was fully prepared and ready to go. He requested his family to have me preach his funeral and gave directions about the same. Bro. Milstead was a good man, as his neighbors will testify. He has gone from us yet his influence for good will never die. May God's richest blessings be with his good wife and his three splendid children. M. T. ALLEN Funeral of D. F. (sic) Milstead (By our correspondent) Bro. D. L. Milstead was buried here Friday afternoon, the services being held at the M. E. Church, this church and the Odd Fellows being in charge. After the sermon by Rev. M. T. Allen, the Odd Fellows took charge and marched in funeral procession to the grave where the beautiful and impressive ceremony of the ritual was given by the lodge officers, followed by the benediction by Rev. Allen. The floral offerings were most beautiful and the songs by choir were very appropriate and appreciated by all. Those in attendance from out of town were A. S. and C. W. Mercer, brothers of Mr(s.) Milstead from Richmond, Mo. Another brother, G. W. Mercer and wife of Muskogee, Okla., missed the train at McAlester, and were unable to be present. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
