H. A. MOMBECK (sic) Mary Teresa Andrews was born at Point Edward, Ontario, Canada, November 10, 1875. She was the oldest of six children of John and Elizabeth Andrews, one dying in infancy and another, John Jr., in 1917. With her parents she moved to Greenleaf, Kansas, living there six months and arriving in Burr Oak in June, 1886, which place has been her home continuously since that time. She was united in marriage to Harry A. Monbeck in 1903. To this happy union child, Murial, was born, whose short life of less than two months blossomed but to bloom in Heaven. Mrs. Monbeck was a staunch Christian and adhered closely to the church of her faith. Her personality was very unusual in many respects. Her keen sense of humor, together with her cheery, courteous manner made friends readily and she counted them chiefly by those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was public spirited in everything contributing to the upbuilding and advancement of the community of which she was so much a part. Her love of music, and being a good musician, made many rejoice with her voice in song and story. She was a member of the Excelsior Club and was its president for many years; ever zealous and untiring in her efforts to make it always a standard of loyalty and honor. At various times she was honored by being on the programs and serving on committees at the State Federation. Her ambition for this little city greatly helped to establish the City Library as we have it today. She was one of the charter members of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and also enjoyed affiliation with the W.C.T.U. She cherished the confidence and love of friends to the very highest degree, willing to sacrifice for others at all times. Mrs. Monbeck had been failing in health for some time, but it was hoped that with the coming of warm weather her condition would improve, but "Minnie," as she was universally known, suddenly passed to the "Great Beyond" in the early hours of a beautiful April day, Wednesday, April 27, 1927, at the age of 51 years, 5 months and 17 days. Thus flickered out of our sight the life of one of our best beloved women, good, conscientious, courageous, sincere. We can truly say, "She hath done what she could." She lives (leaves) to mourn her going away, her kind and devoted husband, an aged mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Andrews, who had a home with her since the death of her husband, John Andrews, in 1907, three sisters, Mrs. J. J. Roberson and Mrs. Margaret Judy of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Lillie Mood of Los Angeles, California, many loving relatives of the family and hosts of friends everywhere. The funeral service was conducted at the home on Saturday, April 30, by J. B. Wagoner of Red Cloud, Nebraska, before a host of sorrowing friends, and interment was made in the Burr Oak Cemetery. - Burr Oak (Kansas) Herald. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
