(8 Feb 1905, Roger Mills Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Pioneer Printer Dead. J. (sic) G. Morris, founder of the Cheyenne Sunbeam, died at Cheyenne on the sixth of this month. Mr. Morris found the first newspaper in the county, and sold it out to D. W. Lacy a year ago on account of failing health. (10 Feb 1905, Cheyenne Sunbeam, Cheyenne, Roger Mills Co, OK): On Monday morning, February 6, 1905, Walter G. Morris passed away. He had been sick for a number of years of pulmonary tuberculosis and many sharp attacks had threatened his life. He was taken severely worse last week, but partially rallied Sunday. A relapse Sunday night rapidly progressed to disolutin (sic) about 11 o'clock Monday morning. Impressive funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday, after which he was buried at the Cheyenne cemetery. He was born in Swindon, England, fifty-three years ago. He came to this country in 1872, and entered his trade, that of a printer, in New York where he labored a good many years. He came west in 1884, settling in Mobeetie, Texas, from which place he came to Cheyenne in 1893. He has lived here since, owning and operating the Sunbeam until some eighteen months ago, when he retired on account of ill health. He was married in 1892 to Miss Georgia Sesse whom he leaves a widow with five little boys. He was open and above board in life and character, subtlety and subterfuge finding no place in his thoughts or actions. The strictest and straightest integrity marked his dealings and his relations to affairs and to men, and he had no sympathy and little patience with mental or moral littleness or with personal or practical dishonesty. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
