All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ************************************************ MORSE, LEONA DEE (13 Jan 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Leona Dee (Bartholomew) Morse, daughter of Luther H. and Eliza M. Bartholomew, was born in Merriman, Ind., Feb 14, 1867, and departed this life in Elk City, Okla., on Jan. 3, 1927, aged 59 years, 10 months, 20 days. Mrs. Morse was united in marriage to Grant C. Morse on August 9, 1896. To this union were born twelve children, five girls and seven boys. Mrs. Morse was preceded to the spirit world by her father, mother, two sisters, Julie Bartholomew and Mrs. Herbert C. Urch, one brother, Herbert Bartholomew, also two sons who died in infancy, Lelarnd and one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Wilson, and then her youngest son, Vernon J. The Morse family came to Elk City, Oklahoma in March 1902, then moving to Rankin, Oklahoma, returning to Elk City two years ago. The remains were taken to Fairlawn cemetery, where they were laid to rest by the side of her son, Vernon, whose death occurred just one week before. The grave was covered with beautiful flowers as tokens of love from relatives and friends. Mrs. Morse was converted when sixteen years of age and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and lived and died a true Christian life. She was also a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge of Elk City, W.C.T.U., and also a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the First M. E. Church. Her membership in church and the Rebekahs were held in Rankin. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Grant C. Morse, children, Mrs. Leota Hance of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Jessie Sowders, Mrs. Marjorie Walden of New Mexico; Mrs. Lelah Marshall, Gaston, of Hobart, Okla.; Tom and Montie Morse, and one brother, Samuel L. Bartholomew of Laverne, Okla., twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, together with other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held in the First M. E. Church on Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. O. B. Lynn, assisted by Rev. C. H. Lemmex. The members of the Rebekah lodges of Rankin and Elk City marched in a body and sat in pews about which their colors had been twined.
