The family moved to Rankin some years ago where they lived on a farm and Vernon attended the school there, and five years ago, when he was converted, he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at that place, keeping his membership there until his death. Two years ago Vernon was paralyzed caused from injury, and he was brought to Elk City for treatment, the family moving here later. Everything was done for him that could be done for his comfort and with hopes that he might recover. Two months ago he was taken to Kirksville, Mo., for treatment and for a while he seemed to be improving, but he became worse and realizing his condition he was anxious to get home to spend Christmas with his loved ones, which he did, and he seemed to enjoy it so much. In the morning he called for the various members of the family to gather around his bedside for special prayer. He had given himself wholly to the Lord, and had lived a true christian life and death had no terrors for him. On Christmas night he had a sinking spell and from there on became weaker until four o'clock in the afternoon he passed away so peacefully. He seemed to see beyond the veil and he spoke the name of "Wilma" his beloved sister who passed away four years ago. He had a warm place in his big heart for home and his loved ones. His sister, Mrs. Sowders, deserves much praise for the tender care she gave him. She accompanied him to Missouri and was ever ready to do everything in her power for his comfort. Vernon was one of a family of twelve children, three infant brothers passing away, one on October 12, 1898 (?), the second one on December 27, 1899 and the third one November 27, 1902. His sister, Mrs. Wilma Wilson on December 24, 1922. He leaves to mourn his loss the parents, four sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Leoti Hance of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Gaston Morse of Hobart, Oklahoma; Mrs. Jessie Sowders, Elk City; T. L. Morse of Colorado; Monta Morse, Elk City; Mrs. Margery Walden of Domingo, New Mexico and Mrs. Lela Marshall of Elk City. All but T. L. and Mrs. Walden were present at the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Walden arrived a short time after funeral services having made trip in auto. Funeral services conducted by Rev. O. B. Lynn, assisted by Rev. Moad, was held in the First M. E. Church on Tuesday afternoon, December 28th. The pall bearers were Victor Davis, Ohler McFarland, Edgar and Carl Nesser, Norville Heston and Carl Clift, the latter being from Rankin and was Vernon's teacher at the time he was injured. The others were members of the Sunday School of the First M. E. Church. The remains were laid to rest in West Fairlawn cemetery. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
