The following is from the Washington, Iowa, paper: MRS. MURKIN DIES AT HOSPITAL TODAY Death Early This Morning Follows Operation - Was 82 Years of Age. Mrs. Roseanna Murkin, aged 82 years, of 1026 East Second street, died at 2:10 this morning at the county hospital, after a brief illness. She became ill January 20 and was taken to the county hospital for an operation in the hope that it would afford relief, but her death occurred there this morning. Roseanna Showalter was born at Wooster, Ohio, December 26, 1839, and was a daughter of Daniel and Catherine (McKaron) Showalter, who moved to Washington when she was five years of age. Her home has been here ever since, but she spent 10 years with her son in Oklahoma at one time. She was married September 23, 1865 to James Murkin, who died here March 22, 1887. They had two children, Mrs. L. M. Meek, who died November 5, 1885, and Ford Murkin, of Washington. She was the oldest of a family of six children, the others being Mrs. Mary Ogden of Burwell, Nebr.; Benjamin F. Showalter and William C. Showalter of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. W. W. Riggs of Fowler, Colo.; and Isaac Showalter, deceased. Mrs. Murkin also leaves one granddaughter, Miss Hazel Meek of Washington. Mrs. Murkin was a member of the Baptist church. Her membership was not merely nominal, but she was genuinely and actively interested in her church and in the cause of Christianity. She enjoyed a wide acquaintance in the community and was known and loved by hundreds of Washington people. Her life was devoted to others. She was always ready and willing to sacrifice her own comfort for those who were suffering or in need. Mrs. Murkin was one of the three surviving charter members of the Washington chapter of the Women's Relief Corps. She was the oldest member of the local Baptist church, having been connected with that congregation in 1854. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
