H. C. NEWBY On last Monday the Death Messenger entered our city and took from our midst, a dear friend and beloved wife and mother. While friends and relatives knew of Mrs. Newby's ill health for the past year, they did not realize her serious condition until last Saturday when it was necessary for her to undergo an operation with the hope that her life might be spared, but she felt and told her family that she would not recover. For almost a year it has been known that she must eventually resort to an operation, but she had such a fear of one that she would not give her consent, until she found that she had only a few days to live and that an operation was her only chance. She fought bravely to live, for life and loved ones were dear to her, and might have conquered had not peritonitis developed early Monday morning. Funeral services were held at the First Christian church Wednesday, November 30th, at 2 P.M., Rev. Haddock of Erick, made a comforting talk to the bereaved ones. The beautiful white casket was covered with a profusion of lovely flowers, which were sent by different classes in school, the Missionary Society, Aid Society and the school faculty. The pall-bearers were composed of the following men; J. M. O'Donnell, Henry Hunter, J. M. Music, Geo. Gordon, W. E. Scott and Sam Wilson. Interment in charge of Grubitz & Son was made at Fairlawn cemetery and the large concourse of friends who followed the remains to the last resting place shows the esteem and love felt for Mrs. Newby in this community. Elizabeth Rogers was born in Decalb county, Missouri, April 10th, 1885 and died in Elk City, Oklahoma, November 28th, 1921. She was married in 1902 to Henry C. Newby at Osborn, Mo., to which union were born six children, one which died in infancy, another, a daughter, Ethel, died a year ago last Christmas eve at the age of sixteen years. Four other children, Muril, age fifteen years, Waverly, age thirteen years, Marie nine and Robert Wayne, age fifteen months old, will miss the tender care of a mother. Besides the grief stricken husband and children the deceased leaves four sisters and three brothers, all of whom live in Missouri. In response to the death message, Fred Newby, brother of H. C. Newby, came for the funeral, and his mother, Mrs. M. E. Newby of Grimes and another brother Joe Newby of Elk City, were also here. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
