C. Newby was born in Perrin, Mo., August 23rd, 1903 and died in Elk City, December 24th, 1919. With her parents she moved to near Sweetwater, Okla., thirteen years ago. Ten years ago the family moved to Elk City, and Ethel had grown to womanhood here. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church on Friday afternoon December 26th, conducted by Mr. T. Bridges of Sweetwater, a special friend of the Newby family and whom they had known since coming to Oklahoma thirteen years ago. He spoke comforting words and told of the beautiful life of the deceased. He also gave a message to the living. The church was crowded with sympathizing friends, who followed the remains to beautiful Fairlawn, where under the direction of Grubitz & Son the body of the beloved daughter and sister was laid to rest. The sympathy of all was extended to the bereaved parents and the many friends did all they could to help them in their grief. The Christmas day that had been planned for so happily by the family was saddened for her loved ones as she lay in her last sleep in the home. The presents she had prepared for her dear ones were treasured so by them for her love and thought had been with each one. It seemed so hard to give up one who seemed to have such a bright future ahead. She was ambitious and had made all know that she would succeed if health permitted. She had felt bad for several days before giving up but would not complain as she did not want to stop school. She graduated last year from the eighth grade but this year was taking some studies in tenth and twelfth grades, along with her Freshman work. Ethel was a home loving girl and always thinking of the happiness of her parents, brother and sister. The day before she had to leave school in her class work of gathering pictures of home she came across the poem. "The House that looked like Home" and it touched her deeply, tears coming to her eyes as she showed it to her chum, Eulalia Hiebert. Besides her parents she leaves two sisters, Merrel and Marie, and one brother, Waverly. The News-Democrat family join the many friends in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones and may the Comforter who is always so near when hearts are sad be with them to help them at this time. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
