(17 Oct 1918, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): CARTER A. NICHOLS Co. I, 387 Inf. Born February 10, 1891. Died October 12, 1918. Last Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Nichols of Elk City, received word that their son, Carter A. Nichols, who was at Camp Cody, New Mexico, was seriously ill, and they left immediately for that place. A telegram was received later that he died last Saturday, the 12th. The remains reached here on Tuesday night and was taken to the Chandler & Robinson undertaking parlors. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at Fairlawn cemetery, Rev. Conley officiating. Deceased was born in Tennessee and came to Oklahoma in the early days, living with his parents fourteen miles south of Elk City. About a year ago they moved to Elk City. One brother, "Boose", who is in the army, left last week to 'cross the water', two brothers, Ed and Will live at Lakemp, Okla., his brother Joe and two sisters, Miss Ethel Nichols and Mrs. Minnie Williams, live in Detroit, Mich., while another sister, Verdie, is with her parents at this place. Three months ago last Monday, he left for Camp, going first to Waco, Texas, and was only recently transferred to Camp Cody.
