She came to this country as a small child. Was married in 1858 to John O'Hara, a soap maker of Quebec, Canada, where they made their home for a short time. In 1859 they moved to Woodburn, Iowa, and underwent the hardships and sufferings as well as the thrills and joys of pioneer settlers, often being compelled to load the family and a few provisions in a wagon and flee from hostile Indians. They settled at Chamoise, Mo., where seven years later her husband died, leaving to her care eleven children, the youngest having been born after her husband's death. Some years later the family moved to Colorado, remaining about a year, after which they went to Spearville, Kansas, where they made their home until 1911, at which time they came to Mangum, Okla. From this time, the family being broken up, she and her grand-daughter, Bernice (Mrs. N. E. O'Brien) made their home with the younger daughter, Anna. Again in 1920 they moved to Kansas, coming to Elk City in June 1922, that she might be near her sons, Pete, John and Mike, who live near this place. She was a good and faithful mother, her two ambitions in life being to serve her Creator and her children. Through the strain of the early hardships and the care of a large family, her health became broken and for the past seventeen years she has been practically helpless. All the comforts and solace that a loving daughter could devise were hers, but she reached the end of her journey at 6:18 a.m. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
