E. PARKS James Elliott Parks was born in Ambus county, Virginia, May 8, 1850, died in Elk City, Oklahoma, May 28, 1924. Mr. Parks came to Texas in 1860 with his parents, who were Milton M. Parks and Sarah Wortham Parks, and settled in Red River Co. His brothers are Milton Parks and Sam Parks of Detroit, Texas, and his sisters are Mrs. Nannie Harris, Hugo, Okla., and Mrs. T. B. Settle, Gainsville, Texas. Mr. Parks was married Nov. 5, 1882, to Carrie Virginia Gordy at Riverland, Clay Co., Texas, to which union six children were born, two of which preceded their father. Mr. Parks was a pioneer in Texas and engaged in the cattle business until coming to Oklahoma in 1901 when he followed farming. He was a quiet, unassuming man, a good man whom every one liked. He had several friends here who were his boyhood friends and who settled in Texas with him. Mr. Parks had been in poor health for many years but showed a decided change for the worse a year ago when he developed serious kidney trouble; however, he was able to be up all the time until a week before passing away. Mr. Parks is survived by his wife and four children, Mercer Parks of Forgan, Okla.; Milton Parks, Holdenville, Okla.; and Misses Blanche and Grace Parks of this city, all of whom were here when he died. Funeral services were held at Fairlawn Cemetery, Revs. Conley and Hamilton officiating. The many beautiful floral offerings evidenced the esteem in which Mr. Parks and his family are held. ---C. H. Parks of Sulphur, Okla., and Mrs. Tom Settle of Gainesville, Tex., who were called here for the funeral of their brother, J. E. Parks, returned to their homes last week. A son, Melvin Parks and family of Forgan, also returned home this week. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
