All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ************************************************ PATTERSON, JAMES SIMMONS (18 Jul 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services for James Simmons Patterson, pioneer resident in the Canute community, were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church in Canute. Rev. L. D. Hawkins, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated. Mr. Patterson had been in poor health for the past two years. He died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. L. Tunnell, in Canute. Mr. Patterson was born January 13, 1854, near LaFayette, Georgia, where he was reared. When a young man he went to Texas, settling near Mineral Wells. He was married there to Miss Malissa Jones, September 18, 1880. He was a member of the First Baptist church since early manhood. Immediate members of the family surviving Mr. Patterson are two sons and one daughter. They are: Mrs. W. L. Tunnell, with whom Mr. Patterson made his home, and Walter Patterson, of Canute, and Virgil Patterson, of Crescent. Besides these there are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Mattie Buzzell, of Mineral Wells, Texas, and a brother, George Patterson, of LaFayette, Georgia. Interment was made in the Canute cemetery (Washita County). George R.
