(16 Jul 1914, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. R. M. Penrose, wife of Robert Morris Penrose, died Saturday, July 11th at 11 a.m., at the Private Hospital of Drs. Tedrowe and Tisdale, of this place, aged 63 years, 4 months and 5 days. She was one of the seven children born to Merritt Arthur and Martha Russell in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois, four of whom survive her. They are Mrs. J. C. Martin and H. A. Russell of Sayre, S. E. Russell of Foss and Miss Anna B. Russell of Davenport, Iowa. She came to this state with her husband and family ten years ago last February, and has lived on their farm six miles west and two miles south of Elk City. At the early age of 17 she was united with the Christian church at Macomb, Ill., and on March 21, 1877, she was married to Robert Morris Penrose. To this union were born six children, five of whom survive her. They are Merritt Arthur Penrose who still resides with his father on the farm together with his wife, James Howard and Frank S. Penrose of Edmonton, Canada, Chester P. Penrose of Oklahoma City and Mrs. Ethel R. Penrose of Wyman, Iowa. The youngest son, Robert Eugene, passed away at the age of 11 years on October 7th, 1905. For more than 37 years she has been a true and faithful wife and companion to her husband, fond and loving mother to her children. She has always been an ardent member to the church to which she belonged and ever a willing worker. She was a friend to everyone and a particular friends to those who needed her aid, no stranger passed hungry, from her door, no sick neighbor ever called to her in vain for aid and the magic touch of her loving hand, the soothing tone of her gentle voice has erased the pain from many an aching brow. Sweet and gentle natured as a girl, she carried this beautiful characteristic with her to her husband and it grew with age on down through the beautiful years she lived a life of sacrifice and service. During this summer she had seemed to be in more than usual good health, and all her friends who had seen her during the few days previous to the operation, which she underwent, stated that she seemed to be more cheerful than ever. But a kind and loving father lingers, with his five remaining children to bless the day that brought her to him. The children left behind will call blessed the day she was destined to be their mother as well as their children's children, for truly in influence of a good life it passed on down the years to children yet to live. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
