Pettus was born near Crab Orchard, Kentucky, July 16, 1832, and died near Elk City, May 3, 1923, aged 90 years, 9 months and 17 days. He moved with his parents to Ray county, Mo., when he was about 16 months old and lived there and in Caldwell county Mo., until 1899 when he located on the farm near Elk City where he died. He was married to Miss Elizabeth A. Wheeler, July 19, 1860. Two children were born to this union, Mrs. M. E. Magill, now of Labelle, Fla., and John S. Pettus of Elk City. His first wife having died, he was married to Miss Malvina Crithfield, February 6, 1867. Five children were born to them of whom three are living: William Pettus of Elk City, Mrs. Lucy A Porta of Shawnee, Okla., and Mrs. Ada Orchard Hays of Portland, Oregon. Mr. Pettus was married the third time in 1903 to Mrs. Martha Martin of Elk City, who survives him. Mr. Pettus was converted in 1854 and soon afterward joined the Methodist church of which he remained a member until after moving to Oklahoma when he joined the United Brethren and was a local preacher of this church until he became too feeble to preach. The funeral was conducted by Rev. DeVore of Elk City, and his remains were laid to rest in Grandview cemetery followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. (Grandview Community News-10 May 1923 Elk City News Democrat): With a sad heart we chronicle the passing away of Mr. W. R. Pettus. So many remember being at the grove adjoining his place on the south, where for the past two years, many would take dinner, ice cream and cake after Sunday school and meeting at Grandview and Bella Vista. Last year they celebrated his 90th birthday there. A large crowd attended the funeral at his home, Friday, May 4th. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, two sons, three daughters and families, three sisters in Mo., and four brothers. After a life well spent and a great part in a Saviors love. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
