JOHN (7 Aug 1913, Thursday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): YOUNG WOMAN DIES ON ROCK ISLAND TRAIN Elk City was the scene of a very touching incident, Tuesday afternoon, when the eastbound train arrived at 2:25. John Powell and wife of Kerbs, Oklahoma, were on their return from Colorado, where they had gone some two months ago, hoping that the mountain air would restore the wife, who was the victim of the "white plague" in its worst form. They remained in the mountains until there was no hope of her improvement, and started home that she might die with her loved ones. She grew weaker, Mr. Powell stated, as they reached low altitude, and died in her chair, shortly after the train passed Merrit. Upon their arrival here, the undertaker took charge of the body and prepared it for the journey. When the bereaved arrived among strangers, without funds to pay for services that were necessary a purse of several dollars was made up for him. Mr. Powell wired his father in McAlester, the circumstances and he wired him money to meet all expenses. The journey was continued on the night train. Mrs. Powell was 24 years old and had been married only 18 months. She was stricken with pneumonia which terminated in what is called quick consumption. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
