Vernon, the six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Rather, died at the home here on December 28th after a brief illness. The remains were taken in charge by Grubitz & Son and prepared for burial and shipped to Gate, Oklahoma, where interment was made. Mr. Rather, father of the boy was formerly employed as telegraph operator with the W.F.&N.W. railway company at this point. (4 Jan 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF VERNON RATHER Vernon Rather, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Rather, died December 28th, after a short illness of pneumonia, aged 6 years and 5 months. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of Grubitz & Son and prepared for shipment to Gate, Okla., their former home, where funeral services were held. Mr. Rather has been the cashier for the W.F.&N.W. at this place, but was recently transferred to Frederick. He was at that place when the news arrived of the serious illness of his little boy, and did not arrive here until after his death.
