W. Read died at the Memphis Hospital at 5 p.m. Friday, December 16, after an illness of several days duration, and was buried Sunday afternoon in Fairview Cemetery. The funeral was held from the First Baptist church Sunday at 2 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. T. Miller, assisted by Dr. J. H. Mallard of the First Presbyterian church, and Rev. C. E. Johnson of the Methodist church. Anna Cathrene (sic) Butchee Read was born January 23, 1863, in Kemper county, Tenn., during the Civil War and was two years of age before her father ever saw her; moved to Texas with her parents more than fifty years ago from Mississippi, locating in Erath county near Stephenville; was united in marriage October 12, 1888, to Albert Wesley Read, at Woodbury, Hill county; eight children were born to this happy union - four sons and four daughters, all of whom are living and present at the funeral except one son. The names of the children are as follows: Mrs. D. L. Kinard, Memphis; Mrs. Jet Fore, White Deer; L. Wesley Read, Dallas; Chas. H. Read, Lubbock; Albert T. Read, residence indefinite; John T. Read, Plainview; Mrs. D. M. Foster, Canyon; Miss Lucille Read, Memphis. Deceased is also survived by four sisters and two brothers. Those present were Mrs. J. W. Strawn, Elk City, Okla.; Chas. Buchee (sic), Blair, Okla.; Mrs. Jim Hastings, Elk City; Mrs. Lou Kimmel, Elk City. A nephew and two nieces from out of town were present: Robert Strawn, Elk City; Miss Velma Read, Hereford; Miss Ione Read, Amarillo. This mother and friend was converted when very young and joined the Baptist church of Memphis with her husband in 1904, shortly after their arrival in Memphis. She was baptised by the late Rev. R. E. L. Farmer. She loved her church, her brothers and sisters in Christ; she loved her neighbors and her community; she was always helping the suffering and the sick and all in need; she was a loving and devoted mother. Albert Wesley Read, husband of deceased, died September 7, 1927, also on a Friday, and buried on Sunday. He was the first secretary of the Memphis chamber of commerce and rendered much service to the community. Memphis has lost one of its greatest and noblest characters; the children have lost a loving and tender mother; and the friends have lost a thoughtful and kind neighbor. The Democrat joins these friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. - Memphis (Texas) Democrat. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
