H. McGrady at 2 o'clock a.m., September 6th, aged 86 years, 8 months and 21 days. Tempie Gayleon was born in Grayson County, Virginia, December 15th, 1838. Was married to David Richardson on August (no day), 1855, also of Virginia. To this union was born seven children, four daughters, Mrs. W. H. McGrady, Mrs. W. M. Austin, of Elk City, Mrs. M. C. Cox, Long Beach, California, Mrs. W. M. Huston who died November 1st, 1919, and three sons, S. P. Richardson, H. M. Richardson, W. M. Richardson of Elk City. Her husband passed away April 12, 1915. Besides the six children she is survived by twenty-three grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She had lived in and around Elk City for twenty-three years and the friends she had made were many. She had been sick for five months, gradually failing in health until death came to relieve her Spirit from the pains of the mortal body. The devotion of relatives and friends were sublime. The world is a better place because she lived; she planted flowers rare and beautiful by the wayside, and can be and is an example which none may scorn and all might follow. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church South of which she was a faithful member and was the oldest member of the congregation. She was so interested in the new church building and broke the first dirt for the new building and was the first to pay her pledge towards its erection. She was so anxious to be able to worship in it, and a few weeks ago she was tenderly taken in car to see the progress made. Knowing her interest in same, it was thought fitting to have the services in the church, though not completed. A large number attended the funeral and among the out of town relatives were Mr. and Mrs. Dave McGrady, of Mangum, and Mr. and Mrs. Odell, of near Sayre. She was laid to rest in Fairlawn cemetery by the side of her husband. CARD OF THANKS Elk City, Oklahoma To our Friends and Neighbors: Conscious always of the ties which have bound us to you in the ordinary relations of life, we have discovered a peculiar graciousness in your many acts of kindness during our recent time of sickness and parting. There has been no visit, no gift, no flower, no sort of service in the illness of our mother, Mrs. Tempie Richardson, but was a real comfort beyond words to express. Your attentions were her constant joy in life; your sympathy for us in her death has been a strong sustaining power, a balm for very sore hearts. Merely to say a word of thanks we recognize as an inadequate return. Yet we are most grateful and long will remember your beautiful ministry at this time. We trust, should like darkened hour come to any of you, that you too will have a company of loving, helpful, sympathetic friends such as you have proved to us. Sincerely and from our hearts, Mr. W. M. Austin, Mrs. M. C. Cox, Mrs. W. H. McGrady, Mr. W. M. Richardson, Mr. S. P. Richardson, Mr. H. M. Richardson. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
