(5 Jul 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Jack T. Rodrigs was born in Illinois in 1860, died at Elk City, June 30, 1928, aged 68 years. Funeral services were held at Rankin, Monday, July 2, at 3:00 p.m. Rev J. H. Snarr and the Odd Fellow Lodge officiating. Interment in White Rose cemetery at Rankin (Roger Mills County). Gentry-Killough in charge. Obituary. Jack T. Rodrigs Uncle Jack lived in the Rankin community about twenty-six years on his homestead one mile north and one-half mile west of Rankin, Okla., and always enjoyed good health, and last Tuesday he called for the doctor the first time in our memory. Dr. Cary answered the call and Jack said that he had over-exerted himself in lifting, that hurt his back, and next day, because he lived alone, he was removed to the Standifer Hospital, Elk City, Okla., where he would get the best of care. On last Saturday, June 30, 1928, he died in his 69th year. Two weeks ago at John M. Butler's funeral, Uncle Jack told of meeting the three Butler brothers, Wilbur, John and Edgar W., when they first came to settle on their homesteads. Also, he said at a funeral like this of an old settler, he always wondered who would be next. The first year on his homestead his sister, Mrs. Wagner and three children, John, Pearlie and baby sister, made their home with Uncle Jack, until they moved on an 80 acre homestead of their own, two miles east of Rankin, now owned by J. C. Crawford, and Mrs. Wagner and family moved to Los Angeles, California. Uncle Jack's house burned several years ago, and very little of his papers escaped the fire, but some I.O.O.F. receipts tell that he joined that order in Los Angeles, Calif., and later a member in Colorado Springs, Colo., and a charter member at Cheyenne, Okla., and Hamburg, Okla., now Rankin, Okla. On May 22, 1928, he had completed 35 years of continuous membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and his brother members were planning to get him a 35 year Veteran's Jewel, and lacked one date, before ordering, the jewel already selected. Jack Rodrigs enlisted in the U. S. Army at St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 3, 1884, Co. D, 3rd Reg. of Artillery, and was discharged at expiration of five year term at Fort Monroe, Va., Sept. 2, 1889. Born at Jacksonville, Illinois. The following is a list of his brothers and sisters and addresses found in Jack's tablet. Sister, Mrs. Jenny Swaly, 723 N. Prairie Street, Jacksonville, Ill. Brother, George Rodrigs, 231 W. Court street, Jacksonville, Ill. Sister Mrs. H. D. Fralies, 282 N. 43rd street, Los Angeles, Cal. Brother S. B. Rodrigs, 31 Wood street, Alameda, Cal. Uncle Jack was a kind and accommodating neighbor and friend, and funeral services were held at the Rankin school auditorium at 2:00 p.m., July 2, 1928, under auspices of Cheyenne, Durham and Rankin I.O.O.F. Lodges, and State Grand Master J. C. Casady gave an eulogistic talk at the grave, and Rev. J. H. Snarr, of Rankin, M. E. Church, officiating. McColgin, Grant Master. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
