(31 Oct 1918, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): YOUNG MARRIED MAN DIES AT ELK CITY Gaylord Rowley, thirty-three years old, died at the Elk Hotel Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of ten days, of pneumonia, following the influenza. Mr. Rowley was manager of the Swift Produce Co. of this place and for awhile had his family here. He was later promoted and was auditor of the company in this section, and was on the road, his family moving to Enid, their former home, where they owned property. Recently when the new manager at this place became sick and had to give up, Mr. Rowley returned here to take charge until a new manager could be secured, and it was at this time he took sick. Mr. Rowley made a host of friends while here and everyone who knew him admired him. He was of a kindly unassuming disposition, quiet and reserved, a man of strict integrity, and won the admiration and esteem of a large circle of business men and friends. He was always so considerate of others, giving a friendly greeting every time he met his friends and to those with whom he had business dealings. He was a member of the Congregational church. He was so devoted to his family. His mother said he never gave her an unkind word. His wife came from Enid as soon as notified of his illness. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Rowley and brother, Herbert of Breckenridge, Okla., and C. A. Jackson of El Reno, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Rowley, were with him several days before he passed away. The remains were prepared by George Grubitz for shipping to Enid, where interment would be made. The family left Wednesday morning with the body. Two sweet little children, Harold, nearly seven years old, and Baby Helen, nine months old, will miss the loving care of a doting father. His loved ones can ever remember with pride the stainless life of this noble husband, son and father. But his going away only makes Heaven dearer and we feel his bright smile will be there to welcome his loved ones and friends when they too pass to their Heavenly home. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
