J. H. ROYSE Sarah Elizabeth Tupman was born in Columbia, Kentucky. She was united in marriage to John Henry Rose, March 3, 1870. Twelve children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Frances Bowman, preceded her in death several years ago. The husband died suddenly at the country home near Elk City February 4, 1923 (1924). Mrs. Royse grew to womanhood near Columbia, Ky. The Tupman family was one of the oldest established families of Adair County. Her father, John Tupman, was prominent in the civic and political interests of Adair County from young manhood, his death occurring suddenly while representing his county in the state legislature. Here has been a life filled with many sacrifices for those she loved. A useful life is closed, a chair is empty, a voice is stilled. Nine children, grown to manhood and womanhood, are grieving for a mother sweetened and mellowed as age bowed her. Seventeen grand children are sadly adjusting themselves to do without Grandmother. Her last sickness was long and spirit breaking, but through it all she never surrendered, only asking to be spared to her loved ones, even though her remaining days be spent in pain. All during her busy life she kept abreast of times. She was known as one of the best read and thoroughly posted women. Even though pain racked and confined to her bed for many months, she never neglected her historical and current reading. Mrs. Royse united with the Christian Church in her early girlhood. She died with the courage of a steadfast Christian faith, having no wish but that the Savior be by her side when the summons should come. (Buried Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City). (25 Jun 1925, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): SCHOOL HEAD HERE ON SAD MISSION C. S. Fordyce, head of the printing Department of the University Preparatory School at Tonkawa, and Mrs. Fordyce, Head of the Teachers' Training and Biology Departments and Dean of Women of the same school, were called here the last of the week by the death of Mrs. Fordyce's mother Mrs. Royce (sic). Mr. Fordyce worked as a printer in Elk City shops some eighteen years ago and is quite well acquainted with the town. Mr. Fordyce called on the News Democrat Wednesday and after inspecting the new plant placed his seal of approval on the equipment and especially the big cylinder book and newspaper press. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
