The interment was made at Fairlawn cemetery in charge of Grubitz & Son. B. H. Russell was married in 1874 at Granbury, Hood county, Texas, to Julia Ann Cogdell and ten children were born to this union, two, Claude and Nora, dying in infancy. The wife died February 19, 1901 in Llano, Texas. The surviving children are Mrs. Laura McElyea, Joe and Frank Russell of Elk City, Mrs. Dolly Morris, Rising Star, Texas; Mrs. Julia Long, Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. May Walker, Eastland, Texas; Tom Russell and Mrs. Sweet Hublett of Elk City. Before moving to Elk City in 1907 Mr. Russell was deputy sheriff and city marshal at Llano, Texas, for twenty-five years. He was elected marshal in Elk City eight years ago which office he filled continuously until his death. He joined the M. E. Church South while living at Llano, and kept his membership there for that was where his wife belonged when she died. Among those in attendance at the funeral was his niece, Mrs. P. R. Sanders, Sheriff Cope, County Attorney Speed and County Clerk M. W. Canavan, of Sayre. (10 Feb 1922, Elk City Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): B. H. Russell, city marshal for the past eight years, was taken ill with pneumonia about two weeks ago, and died Monday at 3 a.m. at his home in this city. Many of the children and friends were with him at the time of his death. Last week it was thought he would recover, but Saturday and Sunday, his condition was reported critical. Berry Hickman Russell, 68 years of age, was born at Bowie, Texas, May 26, 1853. He lived at Llano, Texas, for many years where he was city sheriff or deputy most of the time. He came to Elk City in June, 1907, from Llano, when he worked at his trade, a carpenter. Marshal Russell, as many knew him, was held in high esteem by all our citizens. He was ever faithful and fearless to his duty. Tom and Joe and sisters, Sweet and Mrs. J. C. McElyea of Sayre were the only children here at his death. Mrs. A. H. Morris of Rising Star, Mrs. O. A. Long of Ft. Worth and Mrs. J. H. Walker of Eastland, Texas, and Frank Russell, who was last heard of three years ago in the government service aboard a U.S. submarine chaser in the North Sea, were not here at the death of their father. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. S. DeVore at the M. E. Church, South, Tuesday, February 7, at 2:30 p.m. Interment was a Fairlawn cemetery. The city council men and officers acted as pall bearers. A large number attended the services, which were beautiful. Great wreaths of flowers were donated by various organizations and business men. He leaves eight children to mourn his loss. CARD OF THANKS To the good people of Elk City, who so kindly assisted us in our late bereavement, to those who gave the beautiful flowers, and to the pall bearers and our many dear friends, we wish to express our sincerest thanks.
