Stephen Schachle (sic) was born in Leithenstein, Germany, April 26, 1860, and died at his home in Elk City, Oklahoma, October 10, 1927, age 67 years, 5 months and 14 days. Mr. Schachle come (sic) to America when a young man of 22 years, without a relative here and unable to speak a word of the English language, but by determination, hard work, the desire to do right, and faith in God, he succeeded in life in many ways. He settled in Cincinnatti (sic), Ohio, and there met and married Katherine Klein. To this union was born eight children, one girl and seven boys, all of whom survive their father. The family spent several years on a farm near Butler, Kentucky. They moved to near Elk City, Oklahoma, in April, 1909, and there made their home until a year ago last January, as the children had all married the father and mother decided to move to town and spend their last days in ease together, but fate doesn't always choose our own destiny and Mr. Schachle began to fail more rapidly in health, although he had not enjoyed the very best of health for some time. He never complained, though, kept going, no one realizing how much he really suffered until three weeks before his death, he became bedfast and told his family he knew he couldn't last long. He was a devoted member of the St. Joseph's Church and had always lived an upright, Christian life. Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's Church Thursday morning, October 13, Rev. Father Geerhart officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his going his wife, his daughter, Mrs. Katheryn Roland of Okemah, Oklahoma; seven boys, F. M. Schachle of St. Louis, Mo.; S. E. Schachle of Dubuque, Iowa; G. W. Schachle of Milton, Fla.; John T. Schachle of Canute, Okla.; and A. H. Schachle and C. M. Schachle, both of Elk City, Okla. Seventeen grandchildren and one brother, Martin Schachle of Leithenstein, Germany, also survive him. All the children were here for the last rites except Mrs. Roland, who was confined in St. Anthony's hospital at Oklahoma City, and G. W. Schachle of Florida, whose business and home affairs made it impossible for him to reach here in time. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
