Obit of Charles Le Roy Self, Beckham Co. OK CHARLES LE ROY SELF 1951 Posted by Joan Garvey Obituary (1) Elk City Papers, Beckham Co., October 5, 1951 The body of Pvt. Charles L. SELF, killed in the Korean war on April 9, 1951, will arrive in Elk City at 1 p.m. Sunday The 23-year-old soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harm (Hiram) SELF, lived in Elk City until the age 14. He then moved to Wichita, Kansas. Both his parents preceded him in death. The Martin-Hullum funeral home is in charge of arranagements. Survivors include two brothers, Edgar and Guy of Wichita, Kan., two sisters, Mrs. Charles DeFORE, Huston, Tex. and Miss Montez SELF, of Los Angeles, Calif. Also surviving are two cousins living in Elk City, Mrs. Harry JONES and Mrs. Oscar GIBSON. Services to be held in Elk City are pending. Obituary (2) October 9, 1951 MILITARY RITES SET FOR C. SELF KILLED IN KOREA Military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 181 will be held for Private Charles L. SELF at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Nazarene church. Reverend R. F. McBrien, minister will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairlawn cemetery. SELF was killed in action on April 13, 1951 on the central front in Korea. His body was returned here Sunday by the U. S. Army. The soldier was born in Elk City in 1928. He lived here until 1944 when he moved to Wichita, Kan. He enlisted in the 11th Airborne Division on October 6th, 1950. Before leaving the state he was transferred to the 24th Infantry Division, 19th Regiment Company E. He was a _ BAR man. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Ida Mae DeFORE, Houston, Tex. and Mrs. Montez DEVERS, Eureka, Cal.; one half-sister, Mrs. Nellie JOHNS, Dumus, Tex.; two brothers, Ed and Guy, both of Wichita, Kan.
