(Jan 1922, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF MRS. IDA SHAFER Mrs. F. B. Shafer died Monday morning at the home of her son, J. R. Shafer, after only five days illness of pneumonia, aged 57 years. She with her husband had been at the home of their son since the serious illness of their daughter-in-law last year, and looked after every interest of her only child, J. R., and was devoted to his family. She was an early settler of Oklahoma and one who did much to build up this great commonwealth. She made many friends in our city and deepest sympathy has been expressed by all for the bereaved family. Funeral services were held at the home yesterday afternoon, Rev. John Tracy officiating. Burial in the Miriam cemetery. Among those coming from a distance in attendance to the funeral were her brother, Dr. E. E. Aleinbaugh (sic) of Indiana, and Dr. Shafer, a brother-in-law from Oklahoma City. (3 Feb 1922, Friday, Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services in memory of Mrs. F. B. Shafer, who died last Sunday night, Jan. 29, of pneumonia, were conducted at the home of her son, J. R. Shafer on Adams Street. The services were in charge of Rev. J. A. Tracy. The music, hymns of Mrs. Shafer's own selection, was furnished by the Presbyterian choir. The following friends served as pall bearers: Chas. Johnson, M. M. Brown, J. B. Conway, Wm. Jones, W. M. Adams, Lee Royse, R. B. King, and B. C. Latta. Burial was in Fairlawn cemetery. Many friends were present to share in the sorrow of the family, and relatives from a distance attending were sister, Mrs. J. B. Kent and husband of Chandler, Okla.; brother, Dr. E. E. Allenbaugh of Dale, Indiana; niece, Mrs. Hubert Moore of Hollis, Okla.; and brother-in-law, Dr. W. T. Shafer of Oklahoma City. Ida M. Allenbaugh was born in Indiana, January 21, 1865. She was united in marriage to F. B. Shafer, March 6, 1884, at Elk Falls, Kansas, who, with their only child, J. R. Shafer, survives her. Her father was a minister of the Congregational church and also a physician. From her parents she had a training along both religious and medical lines; early in life she united with the Congregational church at Ft. Scott, Kansas, where she always maintained her membership. Her skill in caring for the sick was in constant requisition; such calls she never refused, and gained so general a reputation for kindness in this respect that all alike gave her the affectionate name of "Mother" Shafer. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Shafer lived on a farm near Chandler, Okla., for the past 28 years, since living at Bronson, Kansas, for ten years of their early married life. The past three years they have often visited their son, J. R. (Jack) Shafer, of this city, and those who knew them held them in high esteem. Early last year they gave up life on their farm to be here with their only children and grandchildren, mother Shafer being of much help and comfort to Mrs. J. R. Shafer when ill for months last year. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
