T. J. SIMS Another pioneer of Elk City has passed to the beautiful beyond. After many weeks of illness Mrs. Martha Sims, died last Sunday at 2 o'clock P.M. and the announcement brought grief and sorrow to her many friends, for old and young loved Grandma Sims. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Christian Church where over 350 people assembled to pay their last tribute of love and respect to one of Elk City's most honored citizens. The services were in charge of L. P. Haddock, Christian minister of Erick and C. H. Lemmex, minister of Elk City. The Ladies Quartette of the Christian Church, composed of Mesdames Reid, Francis Gibbs and Baber sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Beautiful Land." Mrs. Reid sang "Lead Kindly Light." The church was beautifully decorated in lovely potted plants, and the casket in which lay the beloved form was completely covered with cut flowers, in different designs and bouquets, one beautiful large spray being from our school, of which her daughter Miss Emma Sims is a teacher. Mrs. Sims was 77 years old and had lived in Elk City about twenty years. Obituary. Martha C. McWilliams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McWilliams, was born in Keatsville, Barry County, Mo., November 4, 1846; died in Elk City, Dec. 16, 1923. She was married to T. J. Sims in 1861. To this union were born ten children, three daughters preceding her in death, who were Mrs. Belle Roberts, Mrs. Jessie Crown and Nora Sims. The surviving children are: Mrs. Dora McClendon, Clinton, Okla.; Ed R. and Joe Sims of Elk City; Mrs. Paulyne Carlton, Fay, Okla.; Mrs. Maude Ragain, Bokoshe, Okla.; Wilson Sims, Miss Emma Sims. A grandson, Harry Belle Roberts was taken in the home when his mother died where he grew to manhood. He now lives in Chickasha, Okla. Mr. Sims died in Elk City, November 7, 1915. Her parents moved from Missouri to Texas in 1871 and in 1904 she and her husband with their family moved to Elk City, Mrs. McClendon having arrived here before that. Mrs. Sims was raised by christian parents, her mother having been baptized by Barton W. Stone and her father by Alex Campbell, early leaders in the Christian Church. Her father was a pioneer in the work of the Christian Church in Texas where he established churches preaching and teaching. Mrs. Sims saw all her children members of the church except one who died in infancy. She was a charter member of the Christian churches in Ladonia and Celeste, Texas, and Elk City.
