Mr. Sims was born in Tennessee in 1840 and when but a boy he moved to Missouri, where he grew to manhood and married Miss Martha McWilliams, to which union ten children were born, seven of whom are living, three sons and four daughters. From their Missouri home, they moved to Texas and in 1902 came to Oklahoma and settled in Elk City. Mr. Sims served in the Confederacy during the Civil War, being a member of Company C, 11th Missouri Regiment and as a soldier he attained the love and respect of his comrades through his untiring energy, his cool calculating courage and his ability to carry through the plans mapped out for him and his companions. He became a member of the John B. Gordon Camp No. 1550 in this city, at its organization and was faithful and true to its precepts until death. Through his efforts the next reunion of exconfederates in this district, will be held in Elk City and he was very anxious that Elk City should "show the boys" a good time and in anticipation of the pleasure, his many friends promised their support in making everything pleasant for them. Mr. Sims was a good Christian gentleman, a kind loving husband and father, a generous neighbor and a faithful friend. His life was one of unbroken pleasure and comfort to his family. Friends who visited him during his illness, could see that the twilight of his evening was fast giving way to the shadow of death and as the bark left its mooring they bade good-bye until the coming of the new morning. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church, Monday afternoon, Eld. R. A. Gilchrist, officiating, after which members of the John R. Gordon Camp took charge of the remains, and conducted the further funeral ceremonies at the grave, in Fairlawn Cemetery. The pall bearers were his companions in the Camp, who were visably effected by his departure. This entire community extends sympathy to Mrs. Sims, the sons and daughters of their families. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
