Mrs. T. J. Singletary died at her home in Altus, Oklahoma, Friday, December 5th, 1924, at nine thirty A. M., aged 78 years, nine months and eleven days. Funeral services were conducted in the home Saturday forenoon. Her pastor, Rev. Burton of the Baptist Church, conducted the services, assisted by Mr. Lee, pastor of the Christian church. They paid beautiful tributes to the life and character of Mrs. Singletary. The special music was lovely. Many beautiful flowers were banked around and on top of casket showing the great love of friends, neighbors, children and others, and of the high respect in which she was held by all. Her body was laid to rest in the Altus cemetery (Jackson County). Mrs. Singletary had been bed-fast almost continually since last January and death came after a long period of suffering. Mary Alma Morris was born of Scotch-Irish parentage in Selma, Alabama, February 25, 1846 - the daughter of Benjamin F. and Sara Ann Morris. Her girlhood days were spent in Selma and it was here she grew to womanhood. Later the family removed to Douglasville, Texas and it was in Douglasville, Mary Alma Morris met and married Thos. J. Singletary and to this union were born six children all of whom are still living. From Douglasville they moved to Bowie, Texas where they lived until early 1900 when they came to Granite, Oklahoma. Later in the same year, Mr. Singletary filed on a homestead near Grimes, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, and for many years this was the Singletary home. It was in this home that Grandma Singletary spent her pioneer days while Oklahoma was still young, and here is where she not only made her many friends welcome but no traveller ever passed her door without food and shelter with an encouraging word to help him on his way. Grandma Singletary was always cheerful and tried to make the best of life wherever she found it, and it was this characteristic which distinguished her and which made for her such a large circle of friends and acquaintances. In January 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Singletary moved to Altus, Oklahoma - later in May 21st, 1917, Mr. Singletary died, but Grandma still made this her home until her death last Friday. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Altus. Mrs. Singletary leaves one sister - Mrs. G. N. Foreman of Jenks, New Mexico and two brothers; J. E. Morris of Texarkana, Arkansas and W. D. Morris of Beaumont, Texas; also one daughter and five sons; Mrs. R. F. Brady of Grimes, Oklahoma; Frank A. Singletary of Oklahoma City; W. J. Singletary of Elk City; J. T. Singletary of Oklahoma City; Neal G. Singletary of Sherman, Texas; and George M. Singletary of Altus. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Blackburn accompanied by his parents drove to Altus Saturday morning to attend the funeral. For many years the Singletary and Blackburn families were close neighbors near Grimes. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
