(8 Apr 1926, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): ROBERT M. SLOAN DEAD Thursday forenoon the city was shocked to learn that "Uncle Bob" Sloan had died about 5 o'clock in the morning. Wednesday Mr. Sloan was around town as usual, attending to his duties as custodian of the State Bank of Commerce building. Mr. Sloan, familiarly known to everyone in Clayton as "Uncle Bob", was born in Arkansas, August 16, 1843. When still a child he went to Texas with his parents and grew up in that state. In November 1866, he was married to Miss Mary Ellen King and to their union nine children were born. Those surviving the father are: Richard, of Strong city, Okla., King, Ross and William of Arizona; Mrs. Nellie McGuitie and George, of El Paso, Texas; and Mrs. Ruby Banner of Elk City, Okla. Mrs. McGuitie and Mrs. Banner have arrived to attend the funeral and another of his children are expected to arrive in time for the service at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The service will be held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sarah Evans, with whom he had made his home for the past fourteen years, and interment will be made in the Evans family burial ground on the old Evans ranch about three miles south of town. Mr. Sloan was a real old Confederate soldier and about the last "unreconstructed rebel" in this part of the country. He enlisted at the beginning of the war in 1861 in Col. Sol Ross's regiment and served the entire four years under Col. Ross and General Price. After the war he turned his attention to the cattle business and followed it until his retirement some fifteen years ago. He spent nine years as foreman in the employ of Charles Springer at Cimarron, this state. "Uncle Bob" was a great friend to every one, especially to small children. Many little tots in the south part of the city are in tears today because of the loss of their great friend. On nice days it was nothing unusual to see him surrounded by a half dozen children as he passed along the street. "Uncle Bob" was a real man, the kind meant when designated as "One of God's noblemen." We respected and loved him, and sympathize with his sister and his children in their great loss. He lived a good life; he found a good fight; he will rest in peace. Mr. Sloan was Mrs. C. M. Banner's father and Roy Sloan's grandfather - Clayton Citizen, Clayton, N.
