J. T. Smallwood was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on December 6, 1863. He died in Elk City May 15, 1929. Mr. Smallwood was apparently in good health to the time of his death. He was standing in the barn door at his farm talking to two boys whom he had stopped for a friendly conversation when he fell dead. Mr. Smallwood, being a pioneer settler of this country, leaves a host of friends, relatives and acquaintances who regret his passing. He, like the rest of us, had made great plans for the coming years and was busy in his garden the morning of the fifteenth when Mr. W. H. Hewlett drove by on his way to his farm and asked Mr. Smallwood to go with him, which he did, dropping his hoe and leaving his work, expecting to finish it later. Apparently in the best of health and spirits Mr. Hewlett left him at his home where Mr. Smallwood, as usual, bade him a cheerful farewell. At 2:00 o'clock the following afternoon he fell dead without the slightest warning. The open row he had made to plant something in still stands unfinished as he had left it. Mr. Smallwood leaves to mourn the loss a wife, Mrs. Lula Smallwood and his children, eight girls and two boys who are as follows: Mrs. Elinor Baber, Mrs. Nellie Tucker and Mrs. Temple Purdy all of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Ola Plost of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Miss Emma Smallwood of Pampa, Texas, Mrs. Lula Flynn of Elk City, Mrs. Suzanne Morrison of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mrs. Marthena Smallwood of Norman, Oklahoma, and two boys, Jim Gilliam Smallwood of Van Couver, B. C., and Johnston (sic) Thomas, Jr., of Pampa, Texas. Two sisters are Mrs. M. A. Kincaid of Elk City and Mrs. John McDonald of Elk City. Interment was made in Fairlawn cemetery. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
