(16 Oct 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MRS. J. S. SMALLWOOD "Sad is the dear home today, For the shining light is taken away." Mrs. Martha A. Smallwood, wife of J. S. Smallwood, living southeast of Elk City, died at her home last Saturday, October 11th, aged 77 years, 9 months and 14 days. She was born in Illinois, December 27th, 1841, moved to Missouri in 1864 and came to Oklahoma in 1906. On February 9th, 1861, she was converted and joined the Baptist church and for over fifty-eight years she lived a consistent christian life. She was the mother of five girls and two boys, namely, Mrs. Sina Elliott of Grand Junction, Colo.; Mrs. Hattie Gordon, deceased; Mrs. Leona Davis, Mrs. Mary Nesser, Mrs. Georgia Bailey, Ernest and Emmett Smallwood. Mrs. Smallwood had not been in good health for several months, but her friends did not realize she was so seriously ill. Heart disease was the immediate cause of her death. Before going away she made arrangements for her funeral and asked that the pastor preach on the text: "She Hath Done What She Could." The funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday noon. The precious mother and friend looked so peacefully at rest in her beautiful couch casket. A large number of friends gathered at the church showing in every way the love and respect they had for this noble woman. Rev. Conley, a friend of many years, conducted the memorial services and paid many tributes of praise and speaking kind and appreciative words of the life of Mrs. Smallwood. At the close of the services the casket was taken in a motor hearse to be prepared for shipment to Plattsburg, Mo., for interment. Ernest Smallwood, Mrs. Elliott and Mr. Nesser accompanied the remains. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
