(25 Mar 1920, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): WILLIAM L. SMALLWOOD A very large crowd attended the funeral of W. L. Smallwood held at his late home on North Main, last Thursday afternoon. Rev. Pankey was in charge of the services and used as his text, "A Great Man Has Fallen This Day in Israel." After the services interment was made in Thomson cemetery (Thompson Cemetery, Custer County) northeast of Elk City. Members of the M.W.A. were pall bearers and had their beautiful burial ceremony at the cemetery. William L. Smallwood was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, February 24th, 1851, moved to Ray county, Mo., in 1877. He was married to Miss Mary Comer in 1880, to whom one child was born, but died when six months of age. His wife died in 1882 and on February 3, 1887, he was married to Miss Fannie Farris. To this union two children were born, both preceding him in death. He leaves a wife, two brothers, Jonse Smallwood of Elk City, and Dr. M. W. Smallwood of Canute, and two sisters, Mrs. J. W. McDonald and Mrs. Kincaid of near Elk City. During the funeral of Mr. Smallwood, the Farmer's State Bank and Co-Operative Association closed their doors in respect to one of their members and former directors. Mr. Smallwood came to this country twenty-one years ago, and was known by nearly every citizen around here. The large crowd in attendance at the funeral attested the respect in which he was held by the people. He was the organizer of the M.W.A. Lodge of Elk City, a stock-holder and director in the Farmer's State Bank and also of the Co-Operative Association. Mr. Smallwood filled the position of a director of the Farmer's State Bank, which institution he had been associated with since its original organization. The day following Mr. Smallwood's death, the stock-holders met and spread upon the minute book of the regrets at the loss of their business associate. The deepest sympathy of the News-Democrat and many friends are extended to the wife who so faithfully cared for her husband during his illness. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
