ELI SMITH Mrs. Eli Smith of near Berlin, died suddenly last Sunday night, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Ralph. Although past seventy years old, Mrs. Smith was in fairly good health, having spent the day last Saturday, shopping in this city. Mrs. Smith was the mother of eleven children, all of whom are living and, with the exception of one son, who has not been heard from yet, all will be present at the funeral services. The body was prepared for burial by Grubitz & Son and will be held until Saturday awaiting the arrival of relatives from a distance. Interment at the Doxey cemetery. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the husband and children in the loss of their loved one. (Nov 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Our hearts are touched with tender regard as we attempt to honor the memory of Mrs. Charles E. Smith, whom the Death Angel has recently taken from our midst. The news of her death came as a shock to her friends, for she had been to town only the day before and seemed unusually bright and happy in greeting her friends. On Sunday she went about the house as usual, but in the evening complained of being ill, and before medical aid could arrive, she had gone peacefully to her last sleep, to awaken in her Heavenly Home. A dear true friend was Mrs. Smith, a devout christian, an ideal mother and wife, thinking and doing only for the comfort of others, forgetting her own self to lighten the burden of her loved ones. Never speaking ill of any one and ever ready to excuse a fault. Although she had not been in good health for some time, she was always patient and kind. Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Oklahoma sixteen years ago and endured many of the hardships of pioneer life. Since selling their farm they had made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Ed Ralph of the Doxey neighborhood. Emma Catherine Carpenter was born in Syracuse, New York, Aug. 13th, 1848, was married to Charles E. Smith at West Union, Iowa, Dec. 8th, 1867, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Ralph, October 28th, 1917, aged 69 years, 2 months and 15 days. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, eleven children and eleven grand children. The children are: Mrs. B. F. McPherson of Pittsburg, Pa.; Mrs. F. E. Hull, Mich.; Mrs. Harry Simmons, Boone, Iowa; Mrs. E. E. Squires, Lum Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Chas. Sullivan, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. D. D. Bartels, Schaller, Iowa; Mrs. Herbert Hartwell, La Junta, Colo.; Frank A. Smith, Bartlett, Mo.; Mrs. Ed Ralph and Cecil R. Smith of Elk City, Okla.; and Earl Smith of Beaver City, Okla. All of whom were here for the last sad rites. With sorrowing hearts her body was tenderly laid to rest in the Doxey cemetery to await the resurrection morn. Her death was the first in her family and she will be sadly missed by her loved ones and in the community. But she has by her unselfishness, her forbearance, her devotion and her many other virtues, erected a lasting monument in the hearts of her family and friends. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
